Week 4: What You’re For. A Purpose Built for Tuesday Mornings

Most purpose statements are written for a poster. Yours has to work on a Tuesday.

Somewhere in a drawer, a Notes app or a retreat workbook, there’s a purpose statement with your name on it. It probably says something about living fully, making a difference or becoming the best version of yourself.

Lovely. Now ask it a question. Should you go to the Saturday workshop or your sister’s birthday lunch?

Silence. Your purpose has left the chat.

The merchandise problem

Vague purposes sound wonderful and decide nothing. “Live my best life” fits on a mug, a tote bag and a sunset photo in a cursive font. It also fits every option in every decision you’ll ever face, which is why it helps with none of them.

If your purpose fits on a mug and changes nothing on your calendar, it’s merchandise.

A working purpose does a job. It picks winners. It turns some invitations into an easy yes and others into a polite, guilt-free no.

What purpose does in an enterprise

Companies learned this the expensive way. A business without a clear mission ends up with sales chasing one goal, operations chasing another and finance quietly crying into a spreadsheet. Every department works hard. Nothing compounds.

The AI Life Master Plan treats your life the same way. Purpose sits at the centre of six divisions: Health & Energy, Career & Wealth, Relationships, Lifestyle & Leisure, Personal Growth and Community & Contribution. When two divisions argue over your Saturday, purpose settles the argument.

Without one, the loudest division wins. Usually Career. It has the best lawyers.

A Tuesday morning, 7:40am

Two messages arrive before your coffee is ready. A colleague invites you to a Saturday leadership workshop. A friend asks you to help at a community garden working bee, same Saturday.

With a vague purpose, you start a three-day negotiation with yourself. Networking against friendship. Guilt against ambition. You say yes to both and resent one of them by Friday.

With a clear purpose, the answer takes 10 seconds. Say your purpose is “I help people build careers they don’t need a holiday from”. The workshop sharpens it. The garden gets a warm note and a promise to visit in December. Flip it: if your purpose is about building community, the garden wins and the workshop gets the polite no.

Same Tuesday. Same two invitations. Different purpose, different answer, zero guilt.

The 3-question purpose test

Run any purpose statement through these 3 questions before you trust it with your calendar.

  1. Does it help you say no? If it approves everything, it’s decoration.
  2. Does it connect all 6 divisions? A purpose living only in your career leaves your health and relationships fighting over scraps.
  3. Would you still choose it on a bad Tuesday? Tired, behind and mildly annoyed with everyone. If it still feels right then, keep it.

Most first drafts fail question one. Normal. Drafts are cheap.

A one-sentence template

Start here: I [verb] [who] so they [outcome].

  • I teach first-time managers so they lead without losing themselves.
  • I build a calm, organised home so my family has room to grow.
  • I translate complex ideas so people make better decisions with their money.

One sentence. A verb you enjoy, people you care about and a change you want to see. Fancy words optional.

What AI changes

Writing a purpose statement used to mean a blank page, a scented candle and two hours of staring. AI drafts 10 versions in a minute. Your job moves from writing to choosing.

Read the list out loud. Notice which one makes you sit up a little. Your reaction is data. Ask the AI why that version landed, then ask for 5 more in the same direction.

AI drafts. You decide.

Your week four exercise

Take 20 minutes this week and answer 3 questions:

  1. Which 3 values did you name last week? (Skipped week three? Start there.)
  2. Who do you most enjoy helping, and with what?
  3. Look at last week’s calendar. Which hours felt meaningful, and why?

Try this AI prompt:

Act as my personal strategist. Here are my top 3 values and what gives me energy: [paste your answers]. Draft 5 one-sentence purpose statements using the format “I [verb] [who] so they [outcome]”. Then test each one against 3 questions: does it help me say no, does it connect all 6 areas of my life, and would I still choose it on a bad Tuesday? Rank them.
